October Newsletter
Bonjour les
parents,
The first month flew by and it’s been really great! We’ve had lots of fun!
This month, our theme will be spiders (les araignées). This project will be done mostly in English
but it will also be integrated with French, science, art and math. Of course, it also goes very well with
Halloween!
Here’s what’s in
store for the month:
Mathématiques: We will be concentrating on graphing
(concrete graphs, pictographs and bar graphs with legends). We will continue with identifying
characteristics and rules of sorted groups with patterning and shapes. We will continue working with tens (les
dizaines) and ones (les unités) by doing a variety of activities. There will be a strong emphasis on this last
part to allow better understanding of number sense and internalizing more
complex concepts as the year continues. Our
weekly routines run throughout the whole year which includes counting, number
sense strategies, calendar, estimating, word problems, number of the day, centres,
mental math, etc.
E.L.A.: As mentioned above, we will be
concentrating mostly on learning about spiders.
We will be doing a research project about spiders along with a variety
of activities about spiders. It’s a very
interesting and fun-filled unit. We will
also do activities about fall, Thanksgiving Day and Halloween. This month, the children will be starting
Home Reading in English. There will be more information to follow. Regular class routines will continue
throughout the year such as journal writing, centres, spelling, message book,
poetry, etc.
Français: During this month, we will be doing
activities about spiders (les araignées), Thanksgiving Day and Halloween. Some new regular class routines will be
introduced and existing ones will continue throughout the year such as journal
writing, la phrase du jour, les sons (er, é, un, au), poetry, Daily 5 centres, etc.
Sciences de la nature: We will continue with our unit «L’air et l’eau» and will observe and
identify evidence of moving air in indoor and outdoor environments. We will
also observe and identify examples of water in the environment.
Sciences Humaines: We will continue with our unit «La
citoyenneté active et démocratique» and will discuss rights and
responsibilities that students have at home, at school and in the community.
Below are the meeting
reading levels for grade two for September and for June.
English: September – level J
(17) (K – first Report Card)
June – level M (20)
French: September – level 1 (3 – first Report Card)
June – level 8
(French Home Reading books will start
coming home once the children are ready which could be anywhere between
November to January)
Have a great
month!
Merci,
Mme. Kovach & Mme
